This will mark the return of FOHNEU to Portugal after nearly two decades — the last Board Meeting held in the country took place in Lisbon in 2007. We warmly thank Professor José Miguel Padilha, Director of the Nursing School of the University of Porto, for his kind hospitality and support in making this gathering possible.
The European Journal of Occupational Health Nursing (EJOHN) — the official journal of FOHNEU — invites submissions for publication. EJOHN is an open access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing occupational health nursing practice and research across Europe and beyond.
EJOHN serves two core purposes: to support the professional development of occupational health nurses by sharing leading-edge research findings and evidence-based practice; and to disseminate knowledge that raises the profile of occupational health nursing among key stakeholders, including employees, employers, trade unions, and policymakers.
We warmly invite researchers, clinicians, educators, and occupational health professionals to submit their work for consideration. EJOHN welcomes contributions on all aspects of occupational and environmental health, including health surveillance, psychosocial risks, ergonomics, chemical and biological hazards, health promotion, occupational disease prevention, return to work, disability management, legislation, and more.
Types of manuscripts accepted
- Original research articles — studies relevant to occupational and environmental health (max. 4,000 words, ~40 references)
- Systematic reviews and meta-analyses — literature reviews on specific OSH questions (max. 5,000 words)
- Discussion papers — new research directions, approaches, or perspectives in occupational health
- Nursing care papers and clinical cases — practice-based experience, interventions, and clinical reports (max. 2,000 words)
How to submit
Manuscripts are accepted exclusively through the EJOHN online submission system. Before submitting, authors are encouraged to read the full author guidelines available at www.ejohn.eu. All submissions are treated as exclusive to EJOHN and are subject to editorial review. The editors' decisions are final.

Your expertise in prevention, health promotion, and workplace safety makes a profound difference every day. You are the guardians of healthy workplaces, advocates for employee wellness, and champions of resilience in the face of evolving occupational challenges.
On this International Nurses Day, we thank you for your unwavering commitment to protecting and promoting health at work. Your contribution is essential—not only to individual lives but to the strength and sustainability of organizations and communities.

— Florence Nightingale
Happy International Nurses Day!
World Day for Safety and Health at Work – April 28
On April 28, we join the global community in observing the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, a day dedicated to promoting safe and healthy workplaces and honoring the memory of those who have lost their lives or suffered illness due to work-related accidents and diseases.
This day, initiated by international trade unions, reminds us of the critical importance of prevention and the shared responsibility to create environments where every worker can thrive safely.
At FOHNEU, we highlight the indispensable role of Occupational Health Nurses in achieving this mission. OHNs are at the forefront of workplace health, combining clinical expertise with preventive strategies to reduce risks, manage occupational illnesses, and promote overall well-being. Their work ensures that safety is not just a policy but a daily practice embedded in organizational culture.
As we reflect on this day, let us reaffirm our commitment to:
- Preventing workplace injuries and illnesses
- Supporting health and safety education
- Empowering Occupational Health Nurses as key advocates for worker health
Together, we can build safer workplaces and healthier futures.
FOHNEU Celebrates 33 Years of Advancing Occupational Health Nursing in Europe
On March 21st, 2026, the Federation of Occupational Health Nurses within the European Union (FOHNEU) proudly marks its 33rd anniversary since its foundation in 1993 in Windsor, United Kingdom.
FOHNEU was established by seven pioneering countries — Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom — with a clear mission: to represent the voice of Occupational Health Nursing within the EU and promote the Health, Safety, and Well-Being of the European workforce.
As a non-profit organisation, FOHNEU remains committed to collaboration and advocacy, funded entirely by donations from EU nursing organisations and sponsorship. Today, it continues to serve as a vital platform for all Occupational Health Nursing organisations across the European Union.
As FOHNEU celebrates this milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting Occupational Health Nurses and promoting workplace health across Europe.
Thank you to all our members and partners for being part of this journey!
The latest issue of the European Journal of Occupational Health Nursing (EJOHN) is now available. This issue brings together an editorial, review and original research articles, and a continuing education piece, with a particular focus on reproductive toxicants in the workplace and the occupational health implications of sleep disorders.
FOHNEU wishes all members, friends, and sponsors a Happy & Healthy New Year for 2026!
On behalf of the Federation of Occupational Health Nurses within the EU, we extend our warmest wishes for a successful year ahead.
2025 was an exceptional year for FOHNEU, highlighted by the 8th FOHNEU International Congress, organized in Ireland in collaboration with INMO. This remarkable event brought together hundreds of Occupational Health Nurses from across Europe, fostering knowledge exchange, networking, and professional growth.
We sincerely thank all our member associations, universities, sponsors, partners, supporters, and friends for their active role in promoting Occupational Health Nursing. A special recognition goes to all National Representatives for their dedicated work within our committees.
We look forward to continuing and strengthening our cooperation in 2026 and achieving new milestones together.
Wishing everyone a successful and inspiring New Year!

New ERC Guidelines on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: Key Updates for Occupational Health Nurses
The European Resuscitation Council (ERC) Guidelines 2025 have been released, offering the most current, evidence-based recommendations for resuscitation practices across Europe. These guidelines are grounded in systematic reviews and evidence updates from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), published as the ILCOR Consensus on Science with Treatment Recommendations.
Why is this important for occupational health nurses?
In many countries, occupational health nurses play a crucial role in teaching Basic Life Support (BLS) skills to designated workplace first aiders and lay employees. The updated ERC Guidelines ensure that this training reflects the latest scientific evidence and best practices, ultimately improving workplace safety and preparedness for cardiac emergencies.
For full details, visit the ERC official website and review the complete ERC Guidelines 2025.
